Learning Objectives :

The student:

- has an understanding of chemical processes including the choice of raw materials and process procedures for the large-scale synthesis of the desired products;
- can perform and solve simple (stationary) macroscopic energy and mass balances for single process units;
- has an understanding of batch and continuous reactors for single replacement reactions , and the effects of heat and residence time in process equipment;
- gains insight into the relationship between the structure and reactivity of molecules.

Part Chemical Engineering
 
1) Basic concepts in thermodynamics ( heat capacity , standard enthalpy of reaction and the effect on equilibria ).
2) Introduction to the kinetics of single replacement chemical reactions
3) Understanding of model reactors for single replacement reactions with simple reaction kinetics
 
Part Chemistry
 
Introduction to the structure and reactivity of molecules:
1) Electronic structure and covalent bonds
2) Acids and bases
3) Nomenclature and properties of molecules
4) Alkenes: structure and introduction reactivity
5) Alkenes and alkynes: reactions
6) Stereochemistry of molecules
7) Delocalisation of electrons and their effect on stability and reactivity
8) Aromaticity; reactions of benzene
9) Substitution and elimination reactions of alkylhalides

Dit vak vormt een inleiding in de chemie en de chemische technologie waarbij zowel de grondprincipes van de moleculaire wetenschappen worden geïntroduceerd als ook vanuit de chemische technologie grondstoffen, producten en processen aan bod komen.
Short promotional description of the course
This course is an introduction to elementary principles in chemistry and chemical engineering. Basic conventions and principles in the molecular sciences are introduced. Raw materials, reaction products and chemical processes are discussed from a chemical engineering perspective.
