Learning objectives
After following this course:
  • The student understands the basic principles of cell culture and protein determination and is able to perform these techniques safe and adequately
  • The student can develop a detailed research plan on basis of a self-formulated problem definition, research question and hypothesis.
  • The student is able to process and interpret data for answering the research question and implement (suggest) improvement on performed experiments
  • The student has acquired insight in both the limitations as the possibilities of different (project specific) molecular techniques and is able to troubleshoot correctly on basis of the results
Content
The students are divided into groups of maximally 4 students. Each groups handles a specific project, for which in the first 3 weeks a research question, hypothesis and experimental proposal are defined on basis of the project description. To guide the students a weekly meeting with the project supervisor is possible. After approval of the project proposal the students are given the raw data concomitant to their proposed experiments. In the second half of the project, the students will analyse this data to answer their research question. This will be presented in the form of a poster at the end of the project. Also in this part of the project, weekly meetings with the supervisor are possible. Parallel to the research proposal and data analysis, an experimental part is implemented. The basic principles of cell culture and sterility are discussed in the introductory lecture and tested during the practical component ‘cell culture’. During the practical work ‘protein determination’ the students work independently using a standard protocol, gaining insight into the possibilities and limitations in obtaining good and trustworthy data out of experimental work.
