Learning objectives
After passing the course, the student has insight in:
  1. Written communication and can apply this when writing a self-study and a report.
  2. Collaboration with other students and can apply this when together creating a joint groups product.
  3. Reflection on own work and the work of others in the form of peer review and processing intermediate feedback on a draft product.
  4. Making time schedules when planning to work towards a predefined deadline.
  5. Verbal presentations and applies this during meetings, group work and to a broad audience (during the final presentation).
  6. Ways of searching for and dealing with scientific information by means of individually looking up information and using this information for the final product.
After passing the course, the student is able to:
  1. Apply and integrate the acquired knowledge in image analysis, by combining theory, performing experiments and making a computer model (MATLAB).
Show insight in the ethical aspects of working with test subjects by describing and discussing these aspects.
Content
The aim is to design a part of a smartphone app, with which a user can take pictures of birth marks to analyze how risky they are.
 
In the assignment the students will, for example:
  • Brainstorm about what the app needs as input. Is it enough to provide 1 picture or are multiple pictures are needed? Do you want to ask any other information (e.g. age)?
  • Collect some data - from the internet or your own smartphone 
  • Discuss what properties of the birth marks in the images need to be measured (e.g. shape, color) and design a decision system / rule to combine these measurements into an output (e.g. yes/no answer). 
  • Implement a function in MATLAB that takes an image as input, can make the measurements and compute the risk score, and write documentation for this function. 
  • Discuss what the app should give as output (e.g. diagnosis, overall risk score, risk scores for different types of skin cancer, anything else?), how to validate the output, and the implications of this choice. 
  • Write a report about the choices made and the proposed solution, the group work process and/or create a blog post or Youtube video presenting the solution to a general audience

Huidkanker is een veelvoorkomende soort kanker: 40% van alle gevallen. Vroege detectie van huidkanker, dat mogelijk is door plekjes op de huid goed in de gaten te houden, vergroot de kansen op genezing. Maar naar de huisarts gaan voor iedere kleine verandering is voor sommige mensen een obstakel. Een smartphone app die de gebruiker kan vertellen of een plekje niks voorstelt, of nagekeken moet worden, zou die mensen kunnen helpen om toch een afspraak te maken.
Short promotional description of the course
Skin cancer accounts for over 40% of all cancer cases. By detecting skin cancer early, by noticing abnormal changes in birth marks on the skin, survival can be dramatically improved. However, people might hesitate to consult a doctor for any new change that they see. Using a smartphone app as a first check could help people determine whether a change is really nothing, or whether they really should make an appointment
