Learning objectives
After passing the course, the student has insight in:
  1. Written communication and can apply this when writing a self-study and a report.
  2. Collaboration with other students and can apply this when together creating a joint groups product.
  3. Reflection on own work and the work of others in the form of peer review and processing intermediate feedback on a draft product.
  4. Making time schedules when planning to work towards a predefined deadline.
  5. Verbal presentations and applies this during meetings and group work.
  6. Ways of searching for and dealing with scientific information by means of individually looking up information and using this information for the final product.
After passing the course, the student is able to:
  1. Apply laboratory experimental and analytical work in one of the laboratories of the department when formulating and working out a simple research assignment and hypothesis and building and using a MATLAB model and critically reviewing these components and the results.
Content
The course starts with a series of supporting lectures, covering the different experiments and an introduction on the model. During the first 2 weeks of the course, students will formulate their own research question, which they will investigate using the different experiments and the model. The research question and study design will be presented during a presentation session. In the remaining 5 weeks of the course, the students will execute their own research and write a scientific report.

De holtes in borst- en buikholte worden omsloten door sereuze membranen. Bij een operatie aan de onderliggende organen moeten deze membranen geopend en gesloten worden waardoor littekenweefsel en verklevingen kunnen ontstaan en het weefsel niet meer goed functioneert. Als behandeling kan een kunstmatig materiaal als patch worden aangebracht. In deze casus gaan studenten werken aan de ontwikkeling van een kunstmatig vezelversterkt materiaal voor het functioneel herstel van een sereus membraan.
Short promotional description of the course
The thoracic and abdomic/pelvic cavities are covered by serous membranes. Upon operation of one of the underlying organs, the membranes have to be opened and closed, which may cause scar tissue formation and adhesions resulting in a loss of function. As a solution, synthetic materials can be used as patch material to replace the damaged tissue. In this course, students will work on the development of a synthetic fiber-reinforced material for the functional repair of a serous membrane.
