Learning objectives
Basic understanding of most important medical imaging modalities and the most important image analysis procedures.
Content
On the one hand the lecture series will explain the principles underlying the following medical imaging techniques: (a) ultrasound; (b) ionising radiation; (c) radiography; (d) computed tomography; (e) nuclear imaging (scintigraphy, SPECT, PET); (f) magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, the following image analysis concepts will be introduced: filtering techniques (e.g., for noise removal); enhancement procedures (e.g., to enhance edges in an image); morphological operations; and segmentation techniques. These operations allow us to extract information at a higher level, for example, objects. After that we can make measurements from the images, such as the size of an organ or the dimensions of the lumen of a blood vessel.

Imaging speelt een belangrijke rol bij het vaststellen van de diagnose van ziekten en bij het bepalen van de meest optimale behandeling daarvan. Dit vak behandelt de twee aspecten van imaging: beeldvorming en beeldverwerking. In het eerste deel van hetDe helft van de colleges worden richt zich op de principes van de belangrijkste beeldvormende technieken behandeld. In de andere helft van de colleges het tweede deel worden de grondbeginselen van de beeldverwerkingsoperaties uitgelegd, die op medische beelden kunnen worden toegepast en die in de dagelijkse praktijk veel worden gebruikt.

Imaging plays an important role in diagnosing a wide variety of diseases and in determining the most optimal treatment. This course covers the two main aspects of imaging: image acquisition and image processing. In the first part of this lecture series,Half of the lectures will focus on the principles underlying the most important medical imaging techniques are explained. The second part of the course isother half are devoted to the most important approaches for the analysis of medical images as these are often employed in clinical practice.
