Beeldvormende technieken zijn onmisbaar in het in kaart brengen van anatomie en het detecteren van ziektebeelden ter ondersteuning van diagnose. In de (bio)medische technologie staan technieken als ultrasound (echografie) en magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) centraal, mede door hun non-invasiviteit en, naast anatomie, de mogelijkheid tot het verkrijgen van functionele data zoals bloedstroming, hersenactiviteit, en mechanische eigenschappen van weefsel.
