Learning objectives

Applying, synthesizing, and evaluating prior EIT learning in the context of a specific technology as far as the innovation and entrepreneurship aspects are concerned.
After completion of the I&E thesis, students

  • know about the innovation process in general. They know about the state of the art of a particular innovation management process in depth.
  • have developed skills in literature analysis and academic writing. They are aware of state-of-the-art skills of a particular innovation management process.
  • can discuss critically the applicability of a set of innovation management techniques in the setting of a particular real-life innovation management project.
The thesis is closely linked to the major Master thesis that the student will be writing. First, the students identify the state of the art of their major project along the line of the innovation process (nine activities from conceptualization via proto-typing to commercialization of products and processes). Second, the students have to choose one activity that is dominant at the state of the art of their major project among the nine activities. Third, the students have to make a literature analysis concerning the chosen activity. This involves the discussion about current practices against the backdrop of state-of-the art academic discussion on the process step. In addition students discuss to what degree literature can inform their current practice. Moreover students discuss why findings from current literature can or cannot be applied to their innovation project, and what clarifications and modifications on concepts from literature need to be taken into account so that findings from current literature become applicable. Finally third, the students write an essay of this activity in the context of the major project.
